'Mad Max: Fury Road' Racks Up 13 Critics Choice Awards Nominations

The Broadcast Film Critics Association, of which I'm a loyal voting member, released the nominees for the 2016 Critics Choice Awards this morning, and it turns out we  REALLY love Mad Max: Fury Road. The critics group honored George Miller's post-apocalyptic film with a whopping 13 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Cinematography. The film has slowly been picking up momentum since winning Best Film at the National Board of Review and several Golden Globes nominations.

Does this put 'Fury Road' up there with the likes of Spotlight, which has been seen as the clear Oscar frontrunner? The journalism drama scored 8 Critics Choice nominations, which is just shy of the 9 received by The Martian, Carol, and The Revenant. Other films to score multiple nods were Brooklyn, Sicario, The Danish Girl, Jurassic World, and The Big Short which also had 8.  Surprisingly, The Hateful Eight missed out on both Best Picture and Best Director, but still managed 6 nominations.

Overall there weren't a ton of surprises. I'm happy to see Lily Tomlin recognized for her work in Grandma, but not so happy to see Bryce Dallas Howard nominated for Best Actress in an Action Movie for Jurassic World. Seriously?

The Critics Choice Awards, which will combine film and TV for the first time, will be awarded on January 17th.
