'Carol' And 'Bridge Of Spies' Look Strong with Nine BAFTA Nominations
With the Golden Globes coming up this weekend and Oscar nominations following right behind it, the awards season is no longer heating up, it's totally boiling over. The next major awards to come down are the BAFTAs, generally considered the British equivalent to our Oscars. Their nominees were announced early this morning and in a twist on the awards race it was Steven Spielberg's Bridge of Spies that came away looking like a champion.
The spy drama came away with nine nominations, including one for Best Picture. That was enough to tie it with Todd Haynes' swooning period romance, Carol, also n the mix for Best Film along with The Revenant, which had eight nominations, The Big Short, and Spotlight. Those wondering where Brooklyn ended up need look no further than the Best British Film category where it goes up against The Danish Girl, Ex Machina, 45 Years, the documentary Amy, and The Lobster which hasn't had a US release yet. Mad Max: Fury Road, which some still see as a possible Oscar sleeper, managed seven nominations but all in technical categories. The Martian, also considered a dark horse stateside, managed to snag nominations for director Ridley Scott and star Matt Damon. Star Wars: The Force Awakens got on the board with four.
On the acting side it was good to see Jennifer Jason Leigh recognized for her toothy performance in The Hateful Eight since there's some doubt about her Oscars chances. There aren't too many surprises elsewhere with the exception of Bryan Cranston for Trumbo and Maggie Smith for The Lady in the Van. And it's a little weird to see Brie Larson in the Rising Star category given all that she'd accomplished prior to Room.
Check out all of the nominations below.
