'Creed 2' Targets November 2017 Date; Ryan Coogler May Not Direct
One of the brightest highlights of last night's Golden Globes was the response Sylvester Stallone received for winning Best Supporting Actor in Creed. There's a lot of love out there for his performance and the boxing film as a whole, especially since nobody thought a Rocky spinoff could possibly be any good. Not only has it been praised by critics, but the $100M+ box office is the franchise's best in years. That's got MGM talking about a sequel already, and they've got a release date in mind.
According to Variety, Creed 2 is tentatively set for November 2017. That's not too far away, and makes it less likely Ryan Coogler will have time to direct it since he'll be busy with Marvel's Black Panther. That said, he's helping flesh out a storyline that could see Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), who was killed fighting Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, return either in flashback or as part of a prequel plot. If they don't go that route then a traditional sequel following Adonis (Michael B. Jordan) is the way it will go.
