Whatever happened to Kathryn Bigelow's movie on rescued soldier Bowe Bergdahl? It seems to have vanished while her screenwriter Mark Boal has taken the subject to the podcast format. A few years have passed since Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty, and finally she's ready to move on something concrete, and it will definitely be her next project.
A press release from Annapurna confirms that Bigelow will direct and produce an untitled true crime film set in Detroit. She will once again be working from a Boal screenplay, and this time their attention is focused on societal racism as the film will be set in 1967 Detroit during the 5-day riot, also known as the "12th Street Riot", that shook the city. It began with a simple police raid of a local bar and escalated into a deadly conflict that saw the National Guard and U.S. military called in for support, leading to the deaths of more than 40 people and 1,000 injured.
The plan is to have the film ready for theaters next year to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the riots.
