No stranger to weird, colorful, somewhat cheesy performances thanks to her role as Effie Trinket in The Hunger Games, Elizabeth Banks has now signed up for something even weirder. She'll play the villain Rita Repulsa in the upcoming Power Rangers movie directed by Dean Israelite, and instantly becomes the biggest name in a cast full of unknowns.
Banks joins the young, racially diverse cast of Becky G (Yellow Ranger), R.J. Cyler (Blue Ranger), Dacre Montgomery (Red Ranger), Ludi Lin (Black Ranger), and Naomi Scott (Pink Ranger), but some are still pretty upset over her addition. Atrocious website The Mary Sue claims (without a lick of evidence) that some are peeved at Banks' casting because the role of Repulsa has traditionally been played by non-white actresses.
It's Rita Repulsa. Nobody cares. And let's be real about something else. While the actresses who played Rita may have been persons of color, the character is a friggin' alien. Not Asian. Not Latino. An extraterrestrial. Get over it. And did I mention that this was about the role of Rita Repulsa and that nobody cares?
Power Rangers is expected to hit theaters on March 24th 2017.
