It's always fun to watch news outlets scramble to figure out a story none of them seem to have the details to. Normally we see this kind of chaos with superhero movie rumors, but this time it's over Steven Soderbergh's potential return to feature filmmaking, which is something that deserves to be gotten right. Let's try and sort it out.
Soderbergh, who hasn't directed a big screen film since 2013's Side Effects, which was then followed by HBO's Behind the Candelabra, was reported by Variety to be coming back to direct Hillbilly Heist, which would star two of his favorite collaborators, Channing Tatum and Matt Damon. Shortly thereafter they changed the title to Lucky Logan, but Deadline chimed in to flip that around to Logan Lucky while adding that Damon isn't involved but Michael Shannon is. Cue THR, who say that the film is a heist film involving hillbillies, done in the style of Soderbergh's star-studded Ocean's 11.
Meanwhile, Soderbergh himself has been having fun watching all of this mess unfold, dropping a series of tweets basically saying that all of the reports are wrong, which leads one to believe he may not be directing the film at all. Heck, it might not even be a movie.
So who's right? Chances are we won't know the truth until Soderbergh reveals it himself. Apparently many of the biggest studios, such as Warner Bros., Fox, and Sony, are lining up to acquire the project...assuming it actually exists.
