"I hate what people like your client stand for. We're going to prove once and for all that God is dead". So says the evil, cackling, probably pro-Satan ACLU member (Ray Wise) in the trailer for God's Not Dead 2, a sequel to 2014's faith-based hit, God's Not Dead. That film cost only $2M and earned north of $60M, guaranteeing that someone would again challenge the G-O-D's presence so that some studio exec could reap the financial rewards.
The first film starred Kevin Sorbo as a teacher engaged in a discussion with a student about whether God is truly dead. The sequel basically tells the same story from a different perspective, only now it's Melissa Joan Hart as a teacher who drops some Bible verse in class and is taken to court by a Civil Liberties organization with an unholy agenda. Basically, Hart's character is out to prove that God is not dead but that the separation of church and state should be.
For those with a religious persecution complex, this story will probably hit home and there's a good chance the film could do bigger business than the first. Harold Cronk returns as director, and the cast of washed-up TV stars joining Hart includes Robin Givens and the late Fred Thompson. Jesse Metcalfe and Ernie Hudson are also part of the cast.
God's Not Dead 2 opens April 1st, but I assure you it's not an April Fool's prank.
