Integral to any key story surrounding Wolverine is his arch-nemesis, Sabretooth, but the villain has only been seen in two X-Men movies so far. Tyler Mane played him in 2000's X-Men, while Liev Schreiber took on the clawed mutant in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a film nobody wants to remember. With Hugh Jackman set to play Wolverine for the final time, it only makes sense that Sabretooth be part of that story, as well, and it could mean Schreiber's return.
Speaking with MTV, Schreiber confirmed he's been approached about coming back as Sabretooth in The Wolverine 3, as part of what looks to be an adaptation of the "Old Man Logan" comics storyline.
"We’ve talked about it. I don’t know. I mean, he’s mentioned it to me. Old Man Logan story, that’s appealing. That’s something I can do. “Old” being the operative word. Old Man Sabretooth."
It's hard to tell how serious he is about those negotiations, though. Considering Sabretooth's prior appearances were retconned away due to X-Men: Days of Future Past's continuity reset, 20th Century Fox may decide to recast the role as they've done with many others. Schreiber seems like a better fit for the role now than he was before, though, as the "Old Man Logan" storyline is set in a distant, dystopian future where Wolverine is an aging pacifist living a quiet life as supervillains rule the world. Sabretooth would have gotten up there in age, too, despite his healing factor.
The Wolverine 3 will be directed by James Mangold and opens March 3rd 2017.
