Over the last few days Marvel and Sony have been buying up domain names pertaining to Spider-Man, leading many to assume, rightfully as it turned out, that one of them would be the title of the upcoming standalone film. And now we know which one of those domains it will be, as Sony Pictures' Tom Rothman and star Tom Holland hit CinemaCon to reveal the film's title is Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Homecoming? What could that be about? It sounds like the title of a Spider-Man comic book miniseries, no the beginning of a major film franchise. But let's not forget this version of Spidey will heavily focus on his high school experiences. Rothman puts it like this...
“It’s obviously a high school reference and shows Peter Parker’s enduring conflict — saving the world and getting your homework done."
As for what villains could turn up? Don't expect there to be an entire rogues gallery like in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but rumors are already going around about one potential bad guy. Birth.Movies.Death suggests it may be the Vulture, who was expected to be part of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4 at one point, and also would have been included in Sinister Six if Sony hadn't changed course. He's one of Spidey's most enduring foes and it's about time he got the big screen spotlight.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is directed by Jon Watts and open July 7th 2017. Other than Holland, the only confirmed cast are Marisa Tomei as Aunt May and Zendaya Coleman as a character named Michelle.
