Russell Crowe In Talks For Dr. Jekyll-Type Role In 'The Mummy' Reboot

It's not just superhero movies that are getting the cinematic universe treatment. We've seen Paramount assembling the same thing with their Transformers/Hasbro properties, and also Universal has their "Classic Monsters" franchises ready to go. In the case of the latter it's already shaping up pretty nicely with Johnny Depp set to star in The Invisible Man, and Tom Cruise leading a reboot of The Mummy. That's a lot of star power, and now there's even more with the addition of Russell Crowe.

Crowe is in talks for The Mummy, for what is being described as a "Jekyll-like role". And one has to assume if the character is popular that they'll want to spin him off into another movie with Crowe as the lead.  The role has seen Universal reaching out to some big names, such as Tom Hardy, Eddie Redmayne, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Javier Bardem but it was Crowe who won out. He joins Cruise, Courtney B. Vance, Jake Johnson, and Sofia Boutella as the titular mummy. Cruise will play a special forces agent with the story set in the present day, so there's no connection to the earlier Brandon Fraser-led franchise.

The Mummy opens June 9th 2017 with Alex Kurtzman directing. [Deadline/Variety/THR]
