Young Han Solo Role Goes To Alden Ehrenreich

You'd think that news like this would have hit yesterday on Star Wars Day, but according to Deadline and other sites it looks as if Alden Ehrenreich has landed the coveted lead in the young Han Solo spinoff. Ehrenreich had been named as the frontrunner ahead of finalists Jack Reynor and Taron Egerton just last month.

Nothing is official until Disney makes the announcement, of course. Assuming they will confirm the news soon, Ehrenreich takes on one of the most iconic roles in the Star Wars universe, given extra weight after the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Not many details are known about the plot except that it will take place during an early part of the smuggler's career and will include his friendship with Chewbacca. We may also see how he came to acquire the famous Millennium Falcon starship. Yesterday co-director Chris Miller teased the film, which may be titled Han Solo: A Star Wars Story, by showing this image of Han's well-known blaster pistol...

Ehrenreich recently had a comedic role in the Coen Brothers' ensemble Hail, Caesar!, and while he's starred in plenty of films big and small this is obviously the biggest of his career.

Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Han Solo: A Star Wars Story opens May 25th 2018.
