Pablo 'Escobar' Film To Star Javier Bardem And Penelope Cruz

Is Pablo Escobar still alive somewhere running his cocaine empire? You'd think so given the wealth of projects centered on the notorious drug kingpin. For sure there has been a surge of interest about him lately, and now there's another film titled Escobar that will star husband and wife duo, Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz.

Written and directed by Fernando León de Aranoa (A Perfect Day), the film is based on the memoir “Loving Pablo, Hating Escobar”  by Colombian TV star Virginia Vallejo. She had a well-documented romance with Escobar that lasted five years, seeing the man and his empire in a way few did. Her story is chronicled to some extent in the Netflix series, Narcos.

Some time back Bardem had been attached to play Escobar in Joe Carnahan's Killing Pablo, but it never quite came together. So this will give him a shot to finally play the drug lord. Bardem and Cruz have starred together previously in Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Ridley Scott's The Counselor. [Deadline]
