James Wan Says He Chose Directing 'Aquaman' Over 'The Flash'

It's funny that Warner Bros. is now tightening the reins on their DC Comics films because they've been pretty good at offering choices in the past. Dwayne Johnson was allowed to pick any Shazam role he wanted, ultimately settling on the villain Black Adam. And now James Wan reveals he was offered a choice between directing The Flash or Aquaman, with the latter obviously winning out.  He told Uproxx...

"They asked me which of the two characters I’d be interested in and it was between The Flash and Aquaman. This is how I weighed it: For me, we’ve seen various versions of The Flash… There’s a popular show on TV and there was a great one in the ‘90s… But the thing that ultimately pushed me more towards Aquaman is I love the possibility of creating a whole new world. I’ve always wanted to do a world creation story and visually create this amazing, incredible, magical kingdom. And also, I love the fact that Aquaman is an underdog character. I love the fact that people like to make fun of him. [Laughs.] I feel the bar is a lot lower and I can have fun with him!”

He's definitely taken the more difficult road here, as Aquaman is a character who has largely been a laughingstock. Of course that's not likely to remain the case with Jason Momoa playing the underwater hero and eventual Justice Leaguer. But if the film sucks we may hearing from Wan about the poor decision he made. Aquaman is diving into theaters on July 27th 2018.
