After attracting a ton of attention for his Elite Squad flicks, Brazilian helmer Jose Padilha made the Hollywood move with 2014's Robocop reboot and....well, you haven't heard anything about a sequel, have you? Probably not. It didn't go too well, and so Padilha is switching gears by putting together an international cast for his next film, the plane hijacking thriller, Entebbe.
Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl), Daniel Bruhl (Captain America: Civil War), and Vincent Cassel (Jason Bourne) are in talks to join Entebbe, which features a script by '71 writer, Greg Burke. The story is based on the real-life events behind the 1976 hijacking of an Air France flight by two members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Two Palestinians were joined by two Germans in forcing the plane to re-route to Entebbe, Uganda, where they demanded the release of 50 Palestinian prisoners.
The film is being described as a "ticking clock thriller" told from the perspective of the hijackers, passengers, and even Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and future PM Shimon Peres. Sounds like a solid bounce-back film for Padilha, who I think got screwed in the whole Robocop deal. It wasn't a bad movie but there simply wasn't any demand for it. [Deadline]
