It's been a time of transition from John Krasinski, and we're seeing his career diverge into some interesting directions both in front of and behind the camera. Recently he led Michael Bay's...*ahem* divisive Benghazi actioner, 13 Hours, but at this past Sundance he also directed a little ensemble dramedy, The Hollars, which despite following many familiar "coming home" tropes managed to win me over.
Krasinski has debuted the first trailer for The Hollars, in which he stars alongside Margo Martindale, Richard Jenkins, Sharlto Copley, Anna Kendrick, Charlie Day, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Josh Groban and Randall Park. The film is your typical story of a son who returns to his family at a time of great tragedy, in this case his mother's illness. And if you guessed there will be lots of life lessons about growing up and putting the past behind you, then you get a No-Prize. Here's the official synopsis:
John Hollar, a struggling NYC artist is forced to navigate the small middle-American town he left behind when news of his mother’s illness brings him home. Back in the house he grew up in, John is immediately swept up in the problems of his dysfunctional family, high school rival, and an over-eager ex-girlfriend as he faces impending fatherhood with his girlfriend in New York.
The film was written by James C. Strouse, who penned last year's terrific People Places Things. The sentimental and funny vibes are similar, and I would call this an improvement over Kraskinki's directorial debut, Brief Interviews with Hideous Men. Sony Pictures Classics will release The Hollars on August 26th.
