I don't care what anybody says, Sega was way better than Nintendo back in the day. Don't get me wrong, I loved them both and had pretty much every console a kid could ask for, but SEGA repeatedly came up with clever, original concepts that either went ignored or were co-opted by Nintendo. One game that I especially dug was only available for the Sega Mega Drive (which I had the fortune to play fairly often), a little game called Rent-A-Hero, that brought fighting game techniques to the world of action RPGs. It featured a somewhat bizarre premise that sounded like the setup of a movie not your typical console game, and apparently Hot Tub Time Machine director Steve Pink agrees.
THR reports Pink and Jeff Morris are collaborating with Japan's Stories International on a Rent-A-Hero movie, which Pink will direct. The original game followed a young slacker named Taro Yamada who orders a pizza during a house-warming party and is instead delivered a powerful suit of armor. Realizing he still had to pay for the armor, told you this was weird, he decides to become a superhero working for a mysterious company to help the people of his town, only to realize his employers are up to no good. The film will update things a little bit by having him work for a company described as "Uber for heroes".
So add this to the list of upcoming Sega video games being turned into movies. There's already a Shinobi film in the works, and Stories International hopes to do the same with Golden Axe, Virtua Fighter (oh please no), and more. Of course Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega's flagship character, has been a multi-media force for years and it wouldn't be surprising if the blue speedster returns for a cameo in Wreck-It Ralph 2. So wait, how is there not a Ghosts 'n Goblins movie out there yet?
