It was only a couple of weeks ago that audiences roundly rejected a monster movie, The BFG, from none other than Steven Spielberg. So what reason is there to think they'll be invested in J.A. Bayona's A Monster Calls? For one thing it looks utterly gorgeous, and appears to be exploring deeper emotional corners that could attract adults as well as kids, judging by this latest trailer courtesy of USA Today.
Starring newcomer Lewis MacDougall, Felicity Jones, Sigourney Weaver, Toby Kebbell, and Liam Neeson as the voice of the monster, the adaptation of Patrick Ness's novel centers on a young boy coping with school bullies and his mother's terminal illness by escaping into a dark fantasy world. There the monster fills him with stories exploring courage, faith, and loss.
From a visual and thematic standpoint it looks to be a cousin of Where the Wild Things Are. Obviously Bayona hopes the audience who loved that film will turn out for this one when it arrives on October 21st.
