Remember the dazzling chemistry Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone had in Crazy Stupid Love? The kind they tried, and failed, to replicate in Gangster Squad soon after? Well, Whiplash director Damien Chazelle is giving it another go in his passion project, the musical La La Land, and a beautifully melodic first trailer has arrived.
Gosling's vocal chops are heard throughout the trailer as he sings the tune, "City of Stars" (available now on ITunes), penned by Whiplash's Justin Hurwitz. The Los Angeles-based story takes place in the cutthroat world of show business as a jazz pianist and actress try to hold on to their relationship while advancing their careers. It's not often we get an original Hollywood musical nowadays, and it looks like Chazelle is fully committing to making this as close to a stage production as possible. While certainly a modern story it looks like something from the Golden Age of Hollywood, like it could sit side-by-side with the Coen Brothers' Hail, Caesar!
Also starring JK Simmons, John Legend, Rosemarie DeWitt, Finn Wittrock, and Meagan Fay, La La Land opens December 16th.
