What do Woody Allen, Kenneth Longergan, Todd Solondz, and Nicolas Winding Refn all have in common? Well they're directors with strong indie followings and very specific audiences, but they also have had their most recent films picked up by Amazon Studios. The same goes for South Korean helmer Park Chan-wook (Stoker, Oldboy), whose latest, The Handmaiden, hits this fall.
After premiering to rave reviews at Cannes, a new trailer for the film has hit, and it looks to have the director's usual darkly comic sensibilities. The story is based on Sarah Waters' novel, Fingersmith, only moved to 1930s Korea and Japan where a Korean woman is hired to be the handmaiden to a Japanese heiress but is secretly involved in a plot to defraud her of a substantial fortune.
Starring Kim Min-hee, Ha Jung-woo, Kim Tae-ri and Cho Jin-woong, The Handmaiden opens October 14th.
