Let's file this one under "unlikely", but definitely something worth being hopeful about. Now that Brad Pitt's World War Z sequel is in need of a director with J.A. Bayona taking on Jurassic World 2, his sights have apparently turned towards a director he has a long and successful history with: David Fincher.
Variety broke the news that Fincher has been in talks with Pitt to direct the film, with discussions beginning casually some weeks ago, only to heat up in recent days. In theory it makes sense, considering the two have collaborated on Se7en, Fight Club, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, all three films ranking among their best. They've courted one another for other projects with nothing ever coming of it. The most recent example would be 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which still hasn't happened and certainly won't with Fincher. He's been notoriously gunshy about sequels ever since Alien 3, and recently got out of directing a sequel to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Lately Fincher has been having difficulties in the realm of TV, with HBO killing his planned adaptation of Utopia from Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn.
But this is his buddy Brad Pitt, and Fincher may be more open to the idea of taking on a sequel. World War Z was a huge hit despite Pitt having a world of issues with director Marc Forster. The final act was a disaster that had to be rewritten multiple times and then reshot. So it's no wonder Pitt wants someone he's comfortable with behind the camera.
