'Ghostbusters' Could Lose Sony $70M, Making Sequel Plans Unlikely

Well, I have to give it up to my colleague Jim Judy, who was absolutely right in saying there would be no sequel to Paul Feig's Ghostbusters, while I insisted there would be. In my defense, that was based on comments by a Sony exec who said last month that one "will happen". But y'know, losing roughly $70M can change those kinds of plans really fast.

THR reports that the comedy reboot led by Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig could post a $70M loss when final numbers are tabulated. Ouch. The film cost $144M and so far has earned only $180M worldwide, but that doesn't include marketing costs and other factors. Some estimates have projected it to need $300M+ just to break even.

So what does Sony do now? They've invested a lot in growing an entire Ghostbusters cinematic universe, and that plan moves forward, except the focus will be on the animated movie set for 2019 and TV series Ghostbusters: Ecto Force they've been developing for a 2018 debut.
