*UPDATE* New posters and trailers have been released so check 'em out!
Video game movies have a long-storied rep as either critical disasters or box office duds....occasionally both. But one franchise has persevered where others have failed and that's the zombie-infested action flicks, Resident Evil, which began fifteen years ago (!!!) as a spinoff of the popular Capcom video games. Nobody could have expected that five movies and $900M later (at only a $250M budget combined!) we'd be talking about the series drawing to a close with Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. But here we are and it looks like husband/wife duo Milla Jojovich and director Paul W.S. Anderson are going out with a bang.
Jojovich returns as Alice who is once again blasting her way through hordes of zombies, including some that fly, on her quest to destroy the evil Umbrella Corporation. Other popular characters from the game will be showing up, as well, including Ali Larter as Claire Redfield and Shawn Roberts as the villainous Albert Wesker, who just won't seem to stay dead. Honestly, this international trailer could have been footage from any of the previous movies and we might not have known, but its fans who have stuck around from the beginning will be happy for the familiar explosive action they've become accustomed to.
Here's the official synopsis:
Picking up immediately after the events in Resident Evil: Retribution, humanity is on its last legs after Alice is betrayed by Wesker in Washington D.C. As the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity’s final stand against the undead hordes, Alice must return to where the nightmare began – Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse.
In a race against time Alice will join forces with old friends, and an unlikely ally, in an action packed battle with undead hordes and new mutant monsters. Between losing her superhuman abilities and Umbrella’s impending attack, this will be Alice’s most difficult adventure as she fights to save humanity, which is on the brink of oblivion.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter opens January 27th 2017.
