Greg Berlanti To Direct Coming-Out Film 'Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda'
While Greg Berlanti may be best known for leading Warner Bros.' small-screen stable of DC Comics shows such as Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow, it's not all he does. He made his feature directing debut with 2000's The Broken Hearts Club and followed it up a few years ago with heart-warming family dramedy, Life As We Know It, but hasn't been behind the camera for anything since. He's been just a bit busy with superheroes and stuff. Well now he's headed back behind the camera for a film that has nothing to do with DCU heroes.
THR reports Berlanti will direct Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, based on the bestselling YA book by Becky Albertalli. The story is about coming out on one's own terms, centering on 16-year-old Simon Spier whose sexual orientation has been discovered by the class clown who proceeds to blackmail him. Simon not only needs to find a way to come out to his family, but also protect the privacy of the boy he's been secretly emailing.
Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger are adapting the screenplay, and if all goes well Berlanti could have it in front of cameras by early next year.
