It's not often you'll hear something like this, but Marion Cotillard has a movie that nobody really wants any part of. At Cannes she starred in the icily received From the Land of the Moon, and there has been absolutely no desire shown by any distributor to pick it up. Nor have any of the major festivals wanted to add it to their slate. Ouch. So while there's a new trailer for the film it's probably in hopes of securing a deal so that people outside of France will actually see it.
Cotillard is joined by Àlex Brendemühl and Louis Garrel in the Nicole Garcia-directed film about a woman from a small French village who has big ideas on what love should be, and they don't include being married to the guy she's forced to be with. Here's the synopsis:
Gabrielle comes from a small village in the South of France, at a time when her dream of true love is considered scandalous, and even a sign of insanity. Her parents marry her to José, an honest and loving Spanish farm worker who they think will make a respectable woman of her. Despite José’s devotion to her, Gabrielle vows that she will never love José and lives like a prisoner bound by the constraints of conventional post-World War II society until the day she is sent away to a cure in the Alps to heal her kidney stones. There she meets André Sauvage, a dashing injured veteran of the Indochinese War, who rekindles the passion buried inside her. She promises they will run away together, and André seems to share her desire. Will anyone dare rob her of her right to follow her dreams?
From the Land of the Moon hits France in October, and who knows? Maybe we'll get it here soon after.
