Michael Fassbender Wants To Go Straight In First 'Trespass Against Us' Trailer

Already this year we've seen Michael Fassbender get weepy in The Light Between Oceans, a romance drama that audiences seemed to ignore outright. In a few months we'll see a very different side of him in the video game adaptation, Assassin's Creed, which has the potential to launch a franchise. But he has another movie out there right now on the festival circuit and it's Trespass Against Us, a crime drama that has mostly gone unnoticed.

With prestige distributors A24 backing it that is likely to change at some point, and the push begins with the release of this new trailer. Directed by first-timer Adam Smith, it's a multigenerational story about the heir to a powerful crime family who has dreams of a very different life. Here's the snopsis:

Trespass Against Us is set across three generations of the Cutler family who live as outlaws in their own anarchic corner of Britain’s richest countryside. Chad Cutler (Michael Fassbender) is heir apparent to his bruising criminal father, Colby (Brendan Gleeson) and has been groomed to spend his life hunting, thieving and tormenting the police. But with his own son, Tyson (Georgie Smith) coming of age, Chad soon finds himself locked in a battle with his father for the future of his young family. When Colby learns of Chad’s dreams for another life he sets out to tie his son and grandson into the archaic order that has bound the Cutler family for generations. He engineers a spectacular piece of criminal business involving a heist, a high-speed car chase and a manhunt, which leaves Chad bruised and bloodied and with his very freedom at stake.

Regardless of the buzz or lack thereof this is an impressive trailer; exciting, intense, and funny in ways many crime movies aren't. It's hard to get a handle on the tone but that's not such a bad thing right now.

Expect Trespass Against Us to arrive in 2017 following a run on DirecTV beginning November 24th.
