STX Misses The Point, Announces 'Bad Moms' Spinoff, 'Bad Dads'

It may not have had the star power or the major marketing push that other movies had but Bad Moms had something else in its favor. The film was marketed squarely at women, featuring three relatable actresses as mothers who were fed up with the expectations heaped on them by society. And women keyed in on that, lifting the R-rated comedy starring Mila Kunis, Kathryn Hahn, and Kristen Bell to $112M domestically and $170M worldwide.

So obviously there needs to be a spinoff, except....well, this one will be about the dudes.

STX has completely missed why Bad Moms was a hit and will move forward with Bad Dads. Because there aren't enough movies about guys and their problems. Ugh. For that matter, there have been enough lousy comedies about Dads who suck at being at being Dads. Do we really need another? Apparently STX thinks so, but they see it as a means of extending the Bad Moms brand without doing a sequel Here's their chilly press statement on the move...

“Where other studios have automatically green lit traditional and significantly more expensive sequels, STX has determined those sequels on average are grossing 68% less than the originals. Instead, STX has chosen to focus on extending consumer passion for the ‘Bad Moms’ brand with a series of film spin-offs, a reality television show, short form digital content, and a robust consumer products program."

Yuck. So basically they don't have a creative reason to do it; just a financial one. That's promising. We can expect Bad Kids to follow, I'm sure. I got it, they could call it the "Bad Idea" series. Bad Dads will open July 14th 2017. [Deadline]
