Annette Bening And Greta Gerwig Raise A Man In New Trailer For '20th Century Women'

“It’s 1979 and nothing means anything, and I know you less and less every day.”

In Mike Mills' 20th Century Women, straight-laced mom Dorothea (Annette Bening) ponders how she's going to raise her teen son Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann) all by herself at such a turbulent time in the country. The answer? Well, they say it takes a village, and Dorothea gathers up the people around her in hopes they can fill in the gaps where she can't.

A new trailer for the semi-autobiographical drama has arrived, set to the sounds of the era, the Buzzcocks and Talking Heads among them. The California-set film finds Dorothea turning to free-spirited boarder Abbie (Greta Gerwig) and Jamie's crush Julie (Elle Fanning) for help navigating him through a time of great cultural upheaval.

Mills has been around a while but he really found his voice with Beginners a couple of years ago, but it's 20th Century Women that is looking like a major player this awards season. The film opens Christmas Day alongside a bunch of other likely contenders, and having seen it already I hope it manages to emerge from the pack.
