'Don't Breathe' Director Fede Alvarez May Direct 'The Girl In The Spider's Web'

Could Sony finally be about to embark on a sequel to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? Honestly, that question has been asked so many times since David Fincher's 2011 adaptation that it's impossible to tell what is really going on.The first film was expected to be huge, considering the mature thriller's source material was a global bonanza at the time. But it wasn't that big, and Fincher ruffled feathers throughout the expensive production. So he was never going to come back, and it's been up in the air whether stars Rooney Mara and David Fincher would.

Today sees a new sign of potential movement as Variety reports Don't Breathe and Evil Dead director Fede Alvarez is being eyed to direct The Girl In the Spider's Web. For the record, this is not one of the original trilogy of "Millennium" novels penned by Stieg Larsson. Instead it's based on the fourth book written by David Lagercrantz since Larsson died back in 2004.

Steven Knight wrote the screenplay with Scott Rudin and Amy Pascal coming back to produce, basically putting together the old team minus Fincher. The story, which received mixed reviews upon publication last year, finds socially inept computer hacker Lisbeth Salander teaming up with journalist Mikael Blomkvist to stop an underground network of spies. Does this mean Mara and Craig will be reprising their roles? That much is unclear but we know they've been ready to move on from both before, and the stars don't seem pressed to return. The current plan is to fast track the film into production for next year, so whatever is going to happen is going to happen soon.
