The Danish cult comedy Klown has been huge everywhere it's been. In 2010 it was the most watch Danish film in all of Denmark, which is no small feat given the directors that call it home. On the festival circuit it made waves at Fantastic Fest and was picked up by Alamo Drafthouse who put the film out to an eager audience. They followed up that success with a stateside release of the sequel, Klown Forever, earlier this year.
You know what's coming next, don't you? An American remake, of course, and Sacha Baron Cohen is attached to star. The original movie was the brainchild of comedians Frank Hvam and Casper Christensen, who starred in the story of two self-centered married guys who go on a road trip looking to get girls, while one tries to prove he's fatherhood material.
Megan Ellison's Annapurna is lending some serious muscle to this one, while Cohen is so jazzed he's heading to the American Film Market to help sell the film himself. Interestingly, Cohen's wife Isla Fisher had a role in the sequel, and one has to wonder if she played a role in setting this whole thing up. A few years ago Warner Bros. held the remake rights and had wanted Danny McBride for one of the lead roles, but obviously that didn't happen. [ScreenDaily]
