'Pacific Rim' Sequel Title Confirmed As Shooting Begins

It's been a windy, complicated path towards a Pacific Rim sequel. Guillermo Del Toro's film about humans in giant robots battling humungous monsters earned $411M worldwide which is decent but not great. There was some doubt whether there would be another one, and for a while it was taken off the schedule entirely, however we're getting one with Steven S. DeKnight behind the camera and with an entirely new cast. And now as production kicks off we're getting confirmation on the film's title; Pacific Rim: Maelstrom.

Those who have been paying attention the last few months will know this was always the rumored title, but star John Boyega took to Instagram to make it official.

Boyega will play the son of Idris Elba's character, Stacker Pentecost. He's joined by female lead Cailee Spaeny, Scott Eastwood, Jing Tian and Levi Meaden with the possibility some original characters could return. One of them won't be Charlie Hunnam, though. Pacific Rim: Maelstrom opens February 23rd 2018.
