Amy Schumer To Star In 'Barbie' Movie, And Online Trolls Are Going Apeshit Over It

Everybody knows what a Barbie doll is. While the universally-known toy has come to mean a great number of different things since it was launched in 1959, basically she is meant to represent the best of what women should aspire to be. Is controversial comedian Amy Schumer the right one to lead a live-action Barbie movie? I would definitely say "Yes", and Sony Pictures apparently agrees.

THR reports Schumer will star in the Barbie movie, which has been in the works for years now. Diablo Cody, Jenny Bicks, and Hilary Winston have worked on competing versions of the script, but it was Winston's that won out. However Schumer and her sister Kim Caramele will give it a rewrite, probably to make the humor more in line with the star's ideas on self-image, an issue that Barbie has been at the center of for decades. The story will find an imperfect Barbie venturing to the real world where she discovers that being unique is an asset.

This could prove very interesting and perhaps even divisive among fans of the Mattel toy. Schumer's humor is pretty racy, and certainly won't appeal to the little girls who still buy the toy or the endless line of Barbie animated movies. But working in Schumer's favor, at least in my opinion, is that she doesn't fit the classic Barbie mold, which is to be a rail-thin beauty queen. I love Schumer's confidence in herself and her appearance; it's one of the sexiest things about her. She can do some great things with a Barbie movie, and basically she is the only reason I have any interest in seeing it.

Unfortunately, Schumer's casting has already brought out the hateful body-shaming online troll community. Probably it's the same group of mouth-breathers who took a dump on the Ghostbusters casting. There will never be a shortage of assholes ready to degrade women, even over a movie none of them are ever going to see.

The search for a director is on but expect that to change soon. A May 2017 release date has been set although it's doubtful to hit that target.
