'La La Land' Wins Big At The 2017 Critics Choice Awards
Tonight, me and the rest of the Broadcast Film Critics Association and Broadcast Television Journalists Association put our heads together and revealed the winners of the 2017 Critics Choice Awards. And it was another stellar evening for what is shaping up to be the runaway favorite for the Oscars, Damien Chazelle's La La Land. The song and dance film won eight awards, including the prestigious Best Picture and Best Director for Chazelle. Manchester by the Sea also performed well with three wins, one of those Casey Affleck for Best Actor, seemingly solidifying his spot as the clear frontrunner. Natalie Portman won Best Actress for Jackie, while Mahershala Ali won Best Supporting Actor for Moonlight and Viola Davis was Best Supporting Actress for Fences. I was pleased to see Paul Verhoeven and Isabelle Huppert's controversial Elle win for Best Foreign Language film.None of these wins were too far out of step from what we've seen so far.
On to the more fun categories, Margot Robbie won Best Actress in an Action Movie, deservedly so for her performance as Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad. In what I think was a surprise because the CCA tends to lean geeky, Deadpool was bested by Hacksaw Ridge for Best Action Movie, and Andrew Garfield beat out Ryan Reynolds for Best Actor in an Action Movie. Deadpool made up for it by winning Best Comedy with Reynolds taking Best Actor in that field.
