Last night brought us the first trailer for Michael Bay's fifth Transformers movie, subtitled 'The Last Knight', and as usual it was a blitzkrieg assault on the sense. It's what he's good at, and one might think those skills for blowing stuff up would make Bay a natural fit for a superhero movie at some point. Well, Bay would disagree with you on that, but he's actually got a pretty good reason for not wanting to make a movie for Marvel or DC. He told Collider recently...
“I wouldn’t want to, it’s not my thing, it’s just not my gig. I don’t ever wanna take someone like a third of something or second of something. I gotta do my own thing, ’cause the most fun is when a real director creates the world. You know, you talk to Ridley Scott, one our favorite things to do is to create the world. Steven Spielberg, create the world. That is what it’s about.”
There's nothing wrong with that answer at all, unless you want to haggle over how much world-building Bay actually does. I think the biggest takeaway from this is that he doesn't want to fit into a larger cinematic universe, which is interesting because Transformers are now part of a giant cinematic universe put together by Paramount. Maybe that's why he's on the way out? And is there anything stopping him from doing a solo, standalone superhero movie?
Transformers: The Last Knight opens June 23rd 2017.
