Sundance 2017: First Look At 'Mudbound' With Carey Mulligan, Garrett Hedlund, And Jason Mitchell
The last time Sundance hosted such a racially-charged period film the result was Nate Parker's The Birth of a Nation. It would end up the highest-selling title in festival history and, at least for a time, was seen as the early Best Picture favorite. Will any of that help Dee Rees (Pariah, Bessie) and her southern drama Mudbound? Or will buyers be a little gunshy?
Starring Carey Mulligan, Garrett Hedlund, Jason Mitchell, Jason Clarke, Mary J. Blige, and Rob Morgan, the film is based on the Hillary Jordan book set in post-WWII Mississippi.
SYNOPSIS: In the post–World War II South, two families are pitted against a barbaric social hierarchy and an unrelenting landscape as they simultaneously fight the battle at home and the battle abroad. This epic pioneer story is about friendship, heritage and the unending struggle for and against the land.
