HBO Has Four 'Game Of Thrones' Spinoffs In The Works
With only 13 episodes left in the final two seasons of HBO's Game of Thrones, fans have had to prepare for a world without George R.R. Martin's hit series. HBO has had to get ready for such a thing, too, and it's been clear from various rumblings about movies and spinoffs that they aren't willing to give up so easily. I don't think any of us expected them to go quite this big in their efforts, though, because more than one potential folllow-up series is in the works.
According to Variety, HBO has four Game of Thrones spinoffs in the works. We don't know who these shows could follow (Brienne of Tarth HAS to be one, right?) but we have info on who will be getting them off the ground. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will be exec-producing all of them but not working on any scripts. Those tasks have been given to Kick-Ass scribe Jane Goldman, Kong: Skull Island writer Max Borenstein, Oscar-winning L.A. Confidential writer Brian Helgeland, and TV vet Carly Wray. Goldman and Wray are working in connection with Martin, which leads me to think there is something special about those two shows, whatever they turn out to be.
Keep in mind this doesn't mean all of these shows are coming to air. In fact, it's very unlikely all four them will. But you can bet at least one or two will make it, while those that don't will be used in some other fashion, perhaps having their ideas incorporated into the televised programs.
Game of Thrones returns to HBO on July 16th.
