Punch Drunk DVDs: 'Logan', 'Get Out', 'The Great Wall', And More!

NEW THIS WEEK

The acclaimed latest entry in the X-Men film series, Logan, sees Hugh Jackman return for one final bout as the heroic Wolverine. Set in a dystopian future void of Mutants, this brutal, gritty thriller follows the man who once was Wolverine as he is reluctantly forced to protect his former mentor (Patrick Stewart) and the young girl who may be key to saving humanity.

We Said: “If this is truly Jackman's final time as Wolverine, he's chosen the movie that will help him go out on top. Logan is the best superhero movie since Christopher Nolan's 'Dark Knight Trilogy', which it shares a great deal in common with. In a way it's sad to see Jackman go just as the character's full potential has finally been realized. But then one of the great things about Logan is that it is free to be what it is without concern for anything else.  And isn't being free to be an individual what the X-Men are all about?” Rating: 4.5 out of 5

Writer/Director Jordan Peele’s debut feature tells the story of a young black man’s anxiety over meeting his white girlfriend’s family through the filter of psychological horror. This acclaimed social satire thriller breaks new ground for both its previously comedic creative driving force, and the horror genre as a whole.

We Said: “What unfolds in Get Out is best left to be experienced, but the film goes in directions that are both familiar and surprising. Peele embraces genre only when it serves the story and discards it at every other turn. This is a confident effort packed with scares and uncomfortable social commentary about race, power, and control. If Peele can continue to balance his critiques in other genres as skillfully as he does in Get Out, then we have a lot to look forward to. ” Rating: 4 out of 5

Matt Damon stars in this new fantasy epic an ancient warrior imprisoned within the Great Wall of China, who discovers the key to defending the nation from the oncoming invasion of beasts and monsters.

We Said: The Great Wall isn't great cinema but it's a beautiful, well-made, adventurous monster movie that could be American audiences' gateway to even better Chinese epics. It deserves to be judged on the merits not on someone else's preconceived notions based on a trailer.  The best thing about The Great Wall is that it feels like a true partnership between the East and the West, of which there will be many more to come.” Rating: 3 out of 5
