After establishing his genre cred on horror anthologies, then thrillers such as The Guest and You're Next, Adam Wingard hit a stumbling block with Blair Witch, his first real attempt to go mainstream. So it's a little surprising that he's willing to give it another shot, and that a studio is willing to hand over the keys to a major franchise, but that's exactly what is happening. THR reports Wingard is taking over as director of Legendary and Warner Bros.' Godzilla vs. Kong crossover.
The news comes as Wingard has been mentioned for a number of major projects, but it seems to be his genuine passion for Godzilla that won him this one. His Twitter seems to confirm that, too...

Wingard will bring his strong horror background to a film penned by Pirates of the Caribbean's Terry Rossio, along with a number of others in a writers' room consisting of Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne (Star Trek Beyond), Lindsey Beer, Cat Vasko,T.S. Nowlin (The Maze Runner), Jack Paglen (Transcendence) and Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski. It's to be the capper to an interconnected universe that began with 2014's Godzilla, this year's Kong: Skull Island, and the upcoming sequel Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
Next up for Wingard is his live-action remake of Death Note, which hits Netflix in August. Godzilla vs. Kong should stomp its way into multiplexes on May 22nd 2020.
