NEW THIS WEEK
Disney’s
latest animation-to-live-action blockbuster sees the iconic story of Belle
(Emma Watson) and The Beast (Dan Stevens) retold in a stunning realistic world.
Using the brilliant music from the original classic, 2017’s Beauty
and the Beast follows the brilliant Belle as she grows to find the
humanity within The Beast with the help of the enchanted objects in his
majestic castle.
We Said: “Every emotional
beat, every sparkling romantic moment is as you remember it, brought to life
with astonishingly beautiful production values that spring from the screen. If
you thought everything in Cinderella looked like it was made
out of wedding cake, or like it was lifted straight from a storybook, Beauty
and the Beast is even better. The visuals are an almost slavish
recreation of what came before, right down to the choreography on the many
musical numbers.” Rating: 3.5 out of 5
Dan
DeHaan stars in this new surreal thriller from acclaimed visual director Gore
Verbinski as Lockhart, a young Wall Street yuppie sent to a secretive “wellness center”
to retrieve his company's CEO. Things take a terrifying turn, after an
unexpected injury forces him to stay at the spa himself, leaving him vulnerable
to the mysterious workings of the facility’s staff. Disturbing secrets are
revealed and his sanity to put to the test as he struggles to find a way out of
the center.
We Said: “Of course, giving [director
Gore] Verbinski such an amazing amount of freedom has its drawbacks. Lockhart's
sleuthing isn't so interesting to carry 146-minutes, especially since the final
act is where the story grows increasingly pedestrian. Fortunately, the rest of A
Cure for Wellness is anything but pedestrian. With style Verbinski has delivered a truly
imaginative genre experience, and a cure for the common horror..” Rating: 3.5 out of 5
A United Kingdom tells the true story
of Seretse Khama (David Oyelowo), an African Prince who shocked the world when
he married a young white woman from England (Rosamund Pike) in the 1940’s, and
the political complications the couple faced as their love was challenged
internationally.
We Said: “There's no
complete escape from the deluge of story
points and factoids that bog things down, but we remain invested in seeing this
unbelievable partnership endure. Perhaps it's because things are so divided now
racially that A United Kingdom shines like a beacon for how we ought to be.” Rating: 3.5 out of 5
