Tom Cruise Reveals The 'Top Gun' Sequel's Title, Plus New Plot Details

That Top Gun sequel is a real thing, ya'll. Spent years on the shelf since the passing of Tony Scott, the film has been moving at warp speed since Tom Cruise first began talking about it again a couple of weeks ago. Since then we've learned of a start date, and even a director in Joseph Kosinki, and now we know the film will be titled Top Gun: Maverick.

Not exactly exciting, but it works. And Cruise tells Access Hollywood that he wanted something better than simply Top Gun 2...

“I didn’t want a number. You don’t need a number.”

For years we've heard the plot would center on drone warfare and the effect it has on a generation of trained fighter pilots, but Cruise's comments seem to suggest something different...

“Aviators are back, the need for speed. We’re going to have big, fast machines. It’s going to be a competition film, like the first one … but a progression for Maverick."

I'm curious to see the context that a "competition" between ace fighter pilots would happen today, but I'm down to find out.
