Pee-Wee Hits The Road In New 'Pee-Wee's Big Holiday' Trailer

Pee-wee Herman's about to hit the road again, for the first time since Pee-wee's Big Adventure. Okay, that's not exactly true. There was unfortunate sequel, Big Top Pee-wee, but the less said about that the better, unless we're talking about how hot Valeria Golino was. Netflix is bringing Pee-wee back for the Judd Apatow-produced Pee-wee's Big Holiday, and there's now a full trailer for the nostalgic road trip comedy.

Co-starring Joe Manganiello and Alia Shawkat with John Lee directing, the film finds Pee-wee making a new friend, and going on a holiday getaway with him. It's pretty simple in premise, but when you think about it so was Pee-wee's Big Adventure, and that had no shortage of wacky things happening on a regular basis. Here's the official synopsis:

The new film stars the beloved fun-loving hero of TV, stage and film, Pee-wee Herman. In Pee-wee's Big Holiday, a fateful meeting with a mysterious stranger inspires Pee-wee Herman to take his first-ever holiday in this epic story of friendship and destiny. The film stars Pee-wee Herman, Joe Manganiello (True Blood, Magic Mike XXL), Jessica Pohly (Stalker), Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development) and Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), and was directed by John Lee (Wonder Showzen, Pee-wee’s Big Holiday). Paul Reubens and Paul Rust (Love, Arrested Development) wrote the film, that was produced by Reubens and Judd Apatow (Trainwreck, Bridesmaids).

Pee-wee's Big Holiday hits Netflix on March 18th.

Pee-Wee's Back In The Teaser For Netflix's 'Pee-Wee's Big Holiday'

If you grew up in the '80s chances are you're familiar with Pee-Wee Herman, the oddball grown-up child portrayed by Paul Reubens. Beginning as a stand up act before hitting TV and the movies with the classic Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (please ignore the awful sequel), Herman has been out of the spotlight for a long time. But now he's back and looking to make a mark with a whole new generation who may not understand why "I know you are, but what am I?" is funny, and have definitely seen anyone do the "Pee-Wee Herman dance".

Netflix has debuted the first teaser for Pee-Wee's Big Holiday, which Judd Apatow has been on board to produce for years now. Reubens co-wrote the script with Paul Rust (star of Apatow's Love Netflix series), for John Lee (Broad City) to direct. Here's the official synopsis:

Judd Apatow Preps new Pee-Wee Herman Film!

I've had a rash of ex-girlfriends, and even my current one, who don't understand my love of Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. Directed by Tim Burton back in 1985, it's the perfect example of a guy who never can and never would grow up. It's just one big hallucinatory fever dream caught on film. After Pee-Wee, real name Paul Reubens, got caught jerkin' his gerkin' out in public, he pretty much disappeared and both TV and movies havent' been as fun since.

Now out of nowhere comes the story that Judd Apatow will be producing a new comedy adventure starring Pee-Wee Herman. The two apparently met after Apatow saw the newly revived Pee-Wee Herman Show at the Nokia Theater. The tour has been selling out dates for the last few months, triggering a return to prominence for Reubens. A showing of Pee-Wee's Big Adventure sold out at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles just last week.

It doesnt' appear that Apatow has any interest in directing the project. The script is being written by Reubens alongside Paul Rust, who most will recognize as the lead character from I Love You, Beth Cooper. He also had a small role in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds. The film is already being described as a "road pic" with a "gigantic adventure".

Pee-Wee's Big Adventure was a surprise hit back in 1985, coming out of nowhere to take in over $40M. It's since become something of a cult classic. That film's success spawned a less funny, less successful 1988 sequel, Big Top Pee-Wee. It's flat out terrible. Kris Kristofferson must still have nightmares. That led to a highly successful Saturday morning series, which I maintain was far more adult than my kiddie brain could've understood at the time, which ran from 1986-1990.

You can read more of Variety's coverage of the story here.

Pee-Wee Herman is Headed to Netflix with 'Pee-Wee's Big Holiday'

Time to pull Chairy out of storage and put on your favorite bowtie because Pee-Wee Herman is officially making his way to Netflix. The streaming service has announced it will be the exclusive home for Pee-Wee's Big Holiday, a feature film produced by Judd Apatow that is has been in the works off-and-on since it was first revealed in 2010. A deal with Netflix has been on the table since late last year.

Reubens co-wrote the film with Paul Rust (I Love You Beth Cooper), and John Lee will be making his directorial debut. In what sounds like a fitting sequel to Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (and hopefully better than Big Top Pee-Wee), the story begins when "a fateful meeting with a mysterious stranger inspires Pee-wee Herman to take his first-ever holiday in this epic story of friendship and destiny."

No word on when it will debut but production on Pee-Wee's Big Holiday begins soon.

Joe Manganiello Takes Off for 'Pee-Wee's Big Holiday'

Earlier today we learned that Magic Mike XXL's Joe Manganiello wouldn't be playing Deathstroke in Suicide Squad as had been expected. While there weren't any real details as to why (Jim Parrack to the role instead), perhaps these set photos from Pee-Wee's Big Holiday give us all the reason we need?

Set photos from Pee-Wee Herman's upcoming Netflix film show Manganiello giving Pee-Wee a ride on his motorcycle. You could probably fit three Pee-Wee Herman's behind Manganiello's massive physique. In another image we see Pee-Wee and Manganiello looking pretty pissed off. Did Francis steal his bike again?

Pee-Wee's Big Holiday is produced by Judd Apatow and hopefully we'll start learning about other celebrity co-stars and cameos. [Yahoo!]

Pee-Wee Herman's Next Adventure Headed to Netflix

A new Pee-Wee Herman film has been in the works for years, with Paul Reubens talking it up at various points along the way. But none of it amounted to much until Judd Apatow caught wind of his most recent stand-up act featuring the beloved juvenile character who appeared in two movies: Pee-Wee's Big Adventure and the awful sequel Big Top Pee-Wee. Apatow came on board to produce this latest film, but now five years later it finally seems to be moving forward and headed straight to Netflix.

According to The Wrap, Pee-Wee's next big screen adventure is very close to being distributed by Netflix , adding to their growing brand as a destination for major movie releases. Over the last year they've struck a 4-picture deal with Adam Sandler and also secured release of the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon sequel.  It's unclear if the Pee-Wee film will be an exclusive, but that seems likely given their recent acquisitions.

What's also a mystery is the plot and who will direct. Apatow is merely on board to produce, while Reubens is saying a director is in place. He co-wrote the script with Paul Rust, a writer on Arrested Development and star of I Love You, Beth Cooper. Filming on the next Pee-Wee Herman movie could begin in 2015.

Pee Wee Herman ventures into the Source Code!

If you're truly a loyal member of Punch Drunk Critics International, then you probably just finished watching the first 5 minutes of Source Code, which features Jake Gyllenhaal as a soldier who....ummm...well...hmmm....I can't figure out how to explain it.  Maybe Pee-Wee Herman can help?

Judd Apatow-produced Pee-Wee Herman film to begin shooting "very soon"

It was way back in June of 2010 that we first heard of plans for Paul Reubens and Judd Apatow to team-up on a brand new film starring the world's most overgrown child, Pee-Wee Herman. Personally, I never fully bought into the story back then, even with the Pee-Wee character coming on like gangbusters on stage and his HBO special. But despite my doubts, the film has progressed along slowly, with Reubens and Paul Rust(I Love You, Beth Cooper) co-writing. Apatow wouldn't be directing, but is on board as a producer and obviously, a little bit of name brand muscle.

Now we're getting an update from Reubens on the film's status, and he reveals to ComingSoon we may be seeing it sooner than expected....

Pee-Wee's Big Smurfin' Adventure

Say what you want about Pee-Wee Herman, the guy is a friggin' icon. So what if he got caught jerkin' his gerkin' in public? It was at a porno theater, right? Not that I would know from experience or anything but I just kinda assumed everybody did that.  Before I dig myself any deeper, let me just get to the point, and that is that Pee Wee will be voicing Jokey Smurf in the upcoming Smurfs movie. If you'll recall Jokey was the prankster who always gave away exploding gift boxes to his gullible fellow Smurfs. No word on if Pee Wee will be implementing a "word of the day" into the film's script.

Director Raja Gusnell has corralled an impressive list of talent for the combination live-action/computer animated feature: Katy Perry as Smurfette, Alan Cumming(who I always thought reminded me of Pee Wee) as Gutsy Smurf, George Lopez as Grouchy Smurf, and Anton Yelchin as Clumsy. That's in addition to Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, and Hank Azaria as the humans who become mixed up in the Smurfs' world.

The Smurfs is due to smurf theaters on August 3, 2011.

Netflix Reveals Dates for 'Beasts of No Nation', 'The Ridiculous Six', 'Pee-Wee's Big Holiday', and 'Crouching Tiger' Sequel

Netflix isn't holding back in their effort to be a major force throughout Hollywood, and their upcoming slate of films shows the diversity the streaming network is aiming for. Today Netflix has revealed release dates for their original film projects, and as expected they are looking to be major players in the awards season this year.

Fist up is Beasts of No Nation, written and directed by True Detective's Cary Fukunaga with Idris Elba starring. The film will open in limited release and on Netflix on October 16th, putting it right in the awards season race. Based on Uzodinma Iweala's novel, the film centers on a young African boy who is forced to become a child soldier, with Elba playing the warlord who teaches him the ways of war. There have been rumblings from some major distributors about Netflix's release structure, and it will interesting to see how many theaters agree to show the film.

Capping off 2015 will be Adam Sandler's controversial comedy-western, The Ridiculous Six, the first of an exclusive four-picture deal he made with the streaming service. The film will hit Netflix on December 11th and stars Terry Crews, Jorge Garcia, Taylor Lautner, Rob Schneider, Luke Wilson, Vanilla Ice, and Nick Nolte, with plenty of offensive jokes about beavers and tee-pees apparently.

Early 2016 will see the arrival of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend, which will hit Netflix and theaters in China. Nope, no stateside theatrical release for this one. Directed by acclaimed choreographer Yuen Wo-Ping, the film will see Michelle Yeoh reprise her role as Yu Shu-Lien with Donnie Yen joining the cast as Silent Wolf.

And finally, the Judd Apatow-produced Pee-Wee's Big Holiday will premiere in March 2016. Pee-Wee Herman goes on an epic quest of friendship and destiny that will also include Joe Manganiello (Magic Mike XXL) as his best friend.

Review: Changeling

As far as bizzarre true life stories go, Changeling is perhaps the weirdest I've seen since Big Top Pee-Wee. Hm? You're saying Big Top Pee-Wee WASN'T a true story? Yeah right, and I bet he didn't go on a cross country journey to find his missing bicycle, either! You can't fool me.

Changeling is Clint Eastwood's latest directorial effort, as he turns his attention to the Wineville Chicken Coop Murders of 1928. Angelina Jolie plays single mother Christine Collins. In March of that year, her son Walter Collins vanished while staying home alone one day. Five months later, a boy approximately Walter's age turns up. The LAPD, which was rife with corruption and negative press at the time, informs Christine that they've found her son. However, when the two are reunited in front a large gathering of the press, Christine discovers that the boy is not Walter. The LAPD insist to her that he is her son despite her insistence to the contrary. Christine is convinced to take the boy home for awhile to get "reacquainted", but she remains absolute in her belief that her son is still out there somewhere.

Elizabeth Banks, Paul Reubens, and Catherine Keener join Charlie Kaufman's 'Frank or Francis'

As if Charlie Kaufman doing, well, anything isn't cause enough for celebration, his latest film already sounds like it may be his wildest, most ambitious yet. This coming from the guy who gave us Adaptation, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Being John Malkovich, that's really saying something.  His next film, the musical satire Frank or Francis, already has Nicolas Cage, Jack Black, Steve Carell, and Kevin Kline set to star, and yet the cast has just found a way to get even better.

The cast of Take Me Home Tonight relives the 80s in new music video!

I recently(as in a couple of hours ago) had a chance to sit down with Topher Grace and Dan Fogler to talk about their latest film, Take Me Home Tonight. We've posted the different trailers for the film a bunch of times on the site, but in case you missed them you can check out the red band here.  One of the cool things Topher(me and him are cool like that) mentioned was that he and the cast and had just finished a music video for the film where they reenact some of their favorite movies from the 80s. And then whaddaya know! Magically it appears!

The song is Atomic Tom's version of The Human League's 1982 hit, "Don't You Want Me". I managed to figure out most of the movies they're referencing, but in case you ain't got that kind of time I included a list further below, courtesy of our friends at Cinema Blend!  Check it out! You can dance if you want to!

Take Me Home Tonight stars Topher Grace, Dan Fogler, Anna Faris, Teresa Palmer, and Michelle Trachtenberg. Directed by Michael Dowse, the film is due in theaters on March 4th!

The movies referenced in the film are: Alien, Say Anything, Dirty Dancing, Ghostbusters, Weird Science, Ghost, Sixteen Candles, Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, The Karate Kid, E.T., The Empire Strikes Back, When Harry Met Sally, Poltergeist, Top Gun, Splash, Teen Wolf, Back to the Future, Risky Business, Indiana Jones, The Shining, Weekend at Bernie’s, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Rambo, Big, Cocktail, Fletch, Flashdance, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Twins, Terminator, Little Shop of Horrors, The Blues Brothers, The Breakfast Club, Fatal Attraction, Can’t Buy Me Love, Caddyshack, Norma Rae, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

'Gotham' Recap: Season 2, Episode 16- "Wrath of the Villains: Prisoners”

In this week’s episode of Gotham, both Oswald Cobblepot and Gordon have gone through a metamorphosis by the end.  Both ended up finding friendship in the unlikeliest places, and both lost those friends by the end of the episode.  Both Gordon and Oswald will have some tough choices ahead based on the events of this episode.  We focused primarily on Gordon and Cobblepot, so no Bruce and Selina this week.

For Gordon, the episode picks up a presumably a few weeks after the last episode, because Gordon has been in protective custody at Blackgate Prison.  But thanks to the corrupt warden, he’s about to be released into Gen Pop, along with many prisoners who he has put in prison.  Needless to say, there are plenty of people who want to see him dead.  Gordon’s walk into the Gen Pop area feels reminiscent of an episode of Oz, or American Me.  You can see the fear and anxiety on Gordon’s face as he ventures into the lion’s den, he knows his days are numbered.  A prisoner immediately picks a fight with him.  Lucky for Gordon, he has two guardian angels on the inside.  The first angel is Puck, a weakling prisoner who still believes Gordon is the hero cop he was before Edward Nigma framed him.  He even tells Gordon of how his sister is alive because of his actions.  Even Gordon doesn’t believe he is the same hero and warns Puck to stay away for his own safety.  Puck ends up in the infirmary after taking a beating for Gordon.

Speaking of Gordon not being the same person, the last few weeks seemed to have broken him a little bit.  In the opening montage, we see him go through his daily routine and little by little he’s seems like he’s being worn down, which is was prison can do to a person.  To make matters worse, when his former partner Harvey Bullock comes to visit him he tells him that his fiancé Leslie lost the baby due to the stress of his incarceration.  Talk about having a bad month!

While Gordon has been going through his personal hell, Harvey does what any semi-corrupt partner would do: he reaches out to former mob boss Carmine Falcone to help orchestrate a true and blue prison break.  This is where Gordon’s other guardian angel comes in.  The one prison guard who wasn’t in the corrupt warden’s pocket took a likening to him.  The guard warned Gordon when an attempt on his life was made and even ensured that when the attempt on his life was made that the prisoner had a “dummy knife” so Gordon didn’t actually die during the attack.  Even when the Warden found out and attempted to kill Gordon himself, the guard knocked the Warden out and helped him escape through an ambulance truck that was to escort his “dead body” to the morgue.  Gordon made sure that Puck escaped with him, but unfortunately, Puck did not survive, his injuries were too severe.  Now Gordon had a dilemma: does he escape the country and remain a fugitive always looking over his back?  Or does he hide out as a fugitive in Gotham City and try and find out who actually framed him.  Of course, we all know what choice he makes.

Meanwhile, Oswald is getting accustomed to his new lifestyle with his father and his newfound family.  Of course, his step-family aren’t on the level though.  They have been waiting for his father to die of his heart condition so that they can claim his inheritance.  But now that his father has found a true heir with his blood, they are afraid that Oswald will get everything.  While Oswald is bonding with his father (Paul Reubens does a great job and you actually forget that he’s Pee-Wee Herman!), his step-family is trying to figure out a way to ensure that he’s out of the picture.  Of course, every step they take backfires.  Oswald tell his father about his past as The Penguin, and his father doesn’t care, he just is happy that he has his son he never knew about.  So even when they tell him about his son’s criminal past he shrugs it off, and even marvels had how powerful his son was in Gotham’s criminal underworld.  They attempt to get the daughter to seduce him, which he rejects, and they even contemplate having the son seduce him.  The only option for them is to poison Oswald, but even that backfires and the father ends up drinking the poison alcohol drink.

This is particular painful for Oswald, because he’s finally in a good place.  It doesn’t seem like he’s scheming anymore.  He genuinely wanted to just let his past be behind him and move on with an actual family.  With his father dead and his step-family responsible, it seems as though we will soon enough get the good old Penguin back, full of rage and ready to get back to his dirty business.  If he actually gets the inheritance, hell even have a significant amount of money to fund any illegal operations he wants.  Whatever Hugo Strange did to “cure him” will probably no longer have any hold on him.

While this was a solid episode, some things were amiss:

It would have been better to have Leslie come to Blackgate prison and tell Gordon that she lost the baby.  For her to not come and tell him something that important, seems very much out of character for her.  It also will drive a further wedge between the two.  They were already on shaky ground and the child was the one constant that was holding them together.  Does this mean that a reformed Barbara will come back into Gordon’s life?  After all, she is probably “cured” by Hugo Strange the same way that Oswald was.

Although Paul Reubens did a great job as Oswald’s father Elijah, it was very clear that he was going to die by his wife or step-children’s hands as soon as we saw them huddle and plot against Oswald.  Right now they are cookie-cutter villains.  It would be more interesting if they have more complexity, other than just being a gold-digging family out for his money.

It looks like Edward Nigma is going to get caught soon.  That’s a bummer because he’s playing the “bad guy in plain sight” role very well.  But he can only keep up the charade for so long before it gets tedious.  Now that Gordon has a newfound purpose to clear his name, it’s clear that he’s going to get caught.  He’ll probably end up at Arkham Asylum as well for more of Hugo Strange’s experiments.

Woody Allen adds three Italian stars to Bop Decameron cast

Is it possible that getting away from Manhattan has invigorated Woody Allen's creative juices? His most successful recent films have taken him far away from the hustle and bustle of New York, granting him a fresh perspective. His latest, Midnight in Paris, is a perfect example of this, and currently lighting up indie theaters in preparation for a national roll out. However Allen is already hard at work on his next film, Bop Decameron, to be shot entirely in Rome.

Review: Michel Gondry's 'Mood Indigo' Starring Romain Duris, Audrey Tautou, and Omar Sy

The cinematic verve and visual artistry of Michel Gondry has made him a favorite of both cinephiles and casual filmgoers, and it's a reputation earned largely through one film, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The love story at the center of it saw the benefit of Charlie Kaufman's gifted words, building a sturdy foundation from which Gondry's flourishes could stand up. But like Gondry's beautiful but frustrating films that have followed (lookin' at you, The Science of Sleep!), Mood Indigo luxuriates in surreal landscapes but forgets to tell a compelling story.

What passes for a plot is little more than an endless stream of oddities constructed by the wealthy Colin (Romain Duris), an independently wealthy man-child whose home resembles Pee-Wee's Playhouse on steroids. Seriously, this place is a crazy concoction of strange inventions like the pianococktail (it does exactly what you think), and weirder inhabitants like Colin's pet mouse which is really just a dude in a mouse suit. Oh, and his alarm clock literally races around the house every time it goes off. He lives in the home with his lawyer buddy Nicholas (Omar Sy), who specializes in a rubber-legged form of dance that involves literal rubber legs. So yeah, it's a little out there, even for a Gondry film.

And maybe that's the problem in a nutshell. Gondry has become so wistful he no longer has any restraint; there is no method to his madness. So when Colin meets and falls in love with the beautiful and fanciful Chloe (Audrey Tautou), their whirlwind courtship consists of riding in cars made of clouds and other imaginative excursions but little in the way of real bonding. Duris and Tautou have played lovers before, notably in the Spanish Apartment trilogy, and have a goofy, playful chemistry that is easy to fall for. Their scenes together are infectious and enjoyable, with Gondry creating what often amounts to a sweet, confectionery music video of their budding relationship. Before long, Chloe and Colin are married but their wedded bliss is ruined when a water lily begins to grow in her lungs. If she is to survive he must constantly surround her with freshly grown flowers. The financial wear drains Colin's bank account, forcing him to work at increasingly awful jobs to make ends meet.

As things turn for the worse, Gondry slowly darkens his vibrant color palette to a depressing gloom. Colin's world becomes one of shadows and cobwebs, but it's still Gondry playing around with effects so it never feels real. Choosing to show human sadness through camera tricks rather than genuine emotions leaves the film muddled and impossible to relate to. Gondry's movies will never be dull, but Mood Indigo is a beautiful and soulless disappointment from such a talented filmmaker.

Ricky Gervais Tells A Whopper Of A Lie In The 'Special Correspondents' Trailer

While their various shows have leaned towards the dark and the weird, Netflix is leaning hard on comedy when it comes to their original films. Adam Sandler is putting forth crap as part of his 4-picture deal, and last weekend saw the release of Pee-Wee's Big Holiday (which is kinda fun). And next up for them is Special Correspondents, a new comedy featuring Ricky Gervais and Eric Bana, with the first trailer having arrived.

Gervais stars as a struggling radio journalist who spins a crazy lie about being on the frontlines overseas, when in actuality he's safe at home in New York City. This looks better than pretty much all of the movies Gervais has been the lead on, and it doesn't hurt to have Vera Farmiga, Kelly Macdonald, Kevin Pollak, America Ferrera, Raúl Castillo, and Benjamin Bratt as part of the cast.

Special Correspondents hits Netflix on April 29th.

Review: '42' starring Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford

Biopics on larger-than-life figures are always difficult, but they become nearly impossible to pull off when the subject is someone like Jackie Robinson, who is not just a Hall of Fame baseball player but a key fixture in the civil rights movement. Perhaps a fear of screwing up Robinson's incredible story is why writer/director Brian Helgeland tiptoes so cautiously through his life in 42, giving us the simplified, Disney version when there was room for so much more.

Teaser For Judd Apatow's Netflix Comedy 'Love' With Paul Rust And Gillian Jacobs

I don't watch a ton of TV that doesn't involve clotheslines, suplexes, and piledrivers, but a few shows have stuck with me over the years. One is Judd Apatow's Undeclared, which I think is much better than Freaks & Geeks or anything else he did on the small screen. Minority opinion, certainly, but that's okay. It does get me excited to see his next foray into TV with Love, a Netflix comedy series starring Paul Rust and Gillian Jacobs.

The series' first teaser has been released and it doesn't offer any footage, just a flurry of phrases that can be applied to some relationships, and some that are not so likely to be heard. Here's the official synopsis:

Created, written and executive produced by Judd Apatow, Paul Rust and Lesley Arfin, Love follows nice guy Gus (Rust) and brazen wild-child Mickey (Gillian Jacobs) as they navigate the exhilarations and humiliations of intimacy, commitment, love and other things they were hoping to avoid. Love is an unflinching, hilarious and excruciatingly honest take on modern relationships. Brent Forrester and Dean Holland also serve as executive producers of Love.

Rust is part of the Apatow clique along with Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, and those guys but he hasn't really taken off the way they have. His first major film role was in I Love You, Beth Cooper (overshadowed by Hayden Panatierre), followed by a part in Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds (overshadowed by everyone), but he's been busy on everything from Funny People to Bob's Burgers. He's mostly been busy as a writer and worked on the script for Pee-Wee Herman's upcoming Netflix special. Jacobs is best known for NBC's Community, but she was great during her brief stint on HBO's Girls, which Apatow exec-produces.

All 10 episodes of Love hit Netflix on February 19th.
