The New Wave: 5/21/10

You're probably like me in not believing for a millisecond that this is the last we'll see of Shrek or his fairy tale posse, but don't let that stop you from enjoying what I think is the best one since the first. It's certainly good enough to help spur along my forgetting of the third film. In this instance, figures out that the swamp isn't always greener on the other side, as he's tricked into a world where his friends and loved ones don't know he exists. You can read my review here.

Just when MacGruber's production really started to ramp up, so did all the buzz about a possible MacGyver film. Personally, Richard Dean Anderson could've done himself some favors by making a cameo in this hilarious SNL spinoff, pitting the inept super-soldier and his team against a lunatic arms dealer. The rare case of an SNL film that actualy improves on the skit it spawned from. You can read my review of MacGruber here, along with John's take right here.

Once titled Barbarian Princess until a swirl of controversy forced a name change, Marc Forby's story of the last royal head of Hawaii could have been a powerful tale if not for a saggy, plodding script. Princess Kaiulani stars Q'Orianka Kilcher(The New World) as the young, headstrong leader, forced to watch from afar as American forces within her country begin a hostile takeover of Hawaii's government.

If there's time....
There's something magical and poetic about the old west. I'm not talking shootouts and cardgames at a saloon. It's the quiet dedication to duty and tradition you can find in the heart of the modern day cowboy, with Sweetgrass serving as something a goodbye to that ideal. A beautifully shot documentary about the final band of cowboy sheepherders, leading their flock of sheep through the treacherous Beartooth Mountains of Montana.
