There've been a rash of board games being put into development for the big screen lately, but none of them seem even remotely interesting. Tim Burton is looking to change all that as he has signed on to develop a big screen adaptation of Monsterpocalypse. What the heck is Monsterpocalypse? Well, imagine a board game with miniature variations on pretty much every Japanese monster/big robot icon you can think of and have them smashing eachother to bits. Sound like fun? Imagine how the movie would play out.
John August has been hired to draft the script, with the game's creator Matt Wilson assisting. The film is being produced with 3-D in mind, although it's not confirmed whether that will be in post-production or not. Buton is looking to direct the film with a possible 2012 release date.
The story would involve a giant race of monsters who attack Earth, but are defeated. Rather than retreating, they hide underground and begin sending signals out into space, possibly calling in for help. The humans build an army of giant robots to defend against a possible alien invasion.
Giant robots? Always cool. Giant robots fighting giant monsters? Even cooler. Now they just need to find a way to add ninjas and scantily clad Amazonians and this could be the greatest movie ever.
Slashfilm broke the story, which you can read about in its entirety here.
