Other than Sony's search for a new Spider-Man has there been any role that has attracted as much attention and high profile talent as that of Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? I think I was in contention at one point. After months of speculation, with names like Carey Mulligan, Scarlett Johansson, and Natalie Portman bandied about as top contenders, Deadline is now reporting that relative unknown Rooney Mara has snagged the coveted gig.
Mara must've made an impression on Fincher while filming The Social Network, which he also directed. She can most recently be seen in the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street. I'm still racking my brain to figure out who she played in Youth in Revolt earlier this year.
The deal has options for two additional films, which will encompass the last two legs of the trilogy.
I've been an outspoken proponent of Carey Mulligan getting the part, but since she dropped out I just wanted to see someone recognizable. I couldn't pick Mara out of a prison line-up, so this is somewhat disappointing. Whether or not she makes a convincing transformation into the smoldering Lisbeth won't mean much. But this will definitely be a career defining role for her, that will push her past boundaries she probably never thought she'd cross as an actress. This only makes me more interested in revisiting some of her other work to get a bead on what we're in for.
