Shame on me for not paying more attention to the making of Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life. Considering how much I love his work, I found it impossible to get interested in the production. Most of that had to do with the very secretive nature of the film. I managed to not indulge in posting the bootlegged version of this trailer on the site, and now the official version has been released. A word to describe it? "Breathtaking".
Malick's poetic, almost lyrical cinematic style is at full employ here. From the opening moments where we see some of the more mystical elements of the story, to the more grounded scenes covered nicely by a sweeping score and narration that actually doesn't annoy me. I can honestly say that The Tree of Life has just jumped to the top of my most anticipated list. May 27th can't get here soon enough.
Check out the trailer below followed by the plot synopsis, and by all means let us know what you think!
From Terrence Malick, the acclaimed director of such classic films as Badlands, Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950′s. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick’s signature imagery, we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life.
