Tops at the Box Office: Pirates cruises to #1; Bridesmaids holds strong

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides- $90.1M
Nobody's going to be surprised Jack Sparrow's latest adventure was the lead ship this week, surpassing Fast Five for the highest grossing debut of the year. What is surprising is how it fared compared to the other Pirates flicks. While it surpasses the first's $70M opening, it comes in $40M less than Dead Man's Chest, and more than $20M fewer than At World's End. And those didn't have the benefit of increased 3D ticket prices.

2. Bridesmaids- $21.1M/$57.5M
Here's what good word of mouth and a brilliant marketing campaign get you. Bridesmaids had the strongest hold of the week, only slipping 20% which is abnormal for any comedy, especially an R-rated one.
3. Thor- $15.5M/$145M
4. Fast Five- $10.6M/$186M
5. Rio- $4.65M/$132M
6. Priest- $4.6M/$23.7M
A massive 70% drop from last week means this could be the end of any Scott Stewart/Paul Bettany collaborations. Awwww shucks.
7. Jumping the Broom- $3.7M/$31.3M
8. Something Borrowed- $3.42M/$31.4M
I'm enjoying watching the box office tug o' war between Something Borrowed and the vastly superior, less marketed Jumping the Broom.  Both films continue to do similar, decent numbers week in and week out, although the expectations were much lower for Broom.
9. Water for Elephants- $2.15M/$52.4M
10. Madea's Big Happy Family- $990K/$51.8M

 * In stunning limited release numbers, Woody Allen's upcoming comedy travelogue, Midnight in Paris, opened at six sites to a mind blowing $579K. That equals to a $96,488 per site average, the likes of which we haven't seen since Precious burned up theaters a couple of yearrs ago. Midnight in Paris opens here in DC this coming Friday.
