Funny how quickly things change. If you'd asked me a week ago what I thought about the planned remake of Oldboy, one of the truly great revenge films ever, I'd have cried a blue streak. Now, with Spike Lee taking over the directing gig I have a whole new perspective. Bring it on. The only thing that can screw it up now for me is casting, but according to Twitch, Mandate Pictures appears to be on the ball with that as well.
They report that Josh Brolin is at the top of their list for the lead role, as a guy who seeks revenge after spending 15 years locked away in a hotel room by unknown assailants. I think it's a savvy choice, one I probably wouldn't have considered if not for No Country For Old Men. Brolin has the power and presence to control a film like this, in which he'll likely be in almost every scene. No offer has officially been made yet. At least it's not Will Smith.
The script was written by Mark Protosevich, which will draw from the South Korean film and the original manga.
