Christopher Nolan, Michael Bay on shortlist to helm a remake of The Twilight Zone
The coolest thing about 1983's film based on Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone was that it was basically an anthology, with four stories directed by some of Hollywood's finest. Steven Spielberg, George Miller, Joe Dante, and John Landis all helmed portions of the film, which retold three of the TV series classic stories and included one original, very weird piece of work. The Twilight Zone has been brought back numerous times over the years on the small screen, most recently in 2002 hosted by Forest Whitaker, but plans have also been afoot for a feature film, and it looks like Warner Brothers is aiming pretty high with it's list of possible directors.
Variety reports that Christopher Nolan, Michael Bay, Alfonso Cuaron(Children of Men), David Yates(Harry Potter) and Rupert Wyatt(Rise of the Planet of the Apes) are being eyed for the job, with Nolan said to be the highest on the studio's list. Unlike the original, this one wouldn't be an anthology, although that would be pretty awesome considering the talent involved, this one is instead a single story with only one director. Shucks.
The idea first cropped in 2009 when Leonardo DiCaprio and his production shingle Appian Way came aboard. The latest script was written by virtual unknown Jason Rothenberg, with plot details remaining under wraps at this point.
So would Nolan take the job? Sources say he'd interested but may balk because of the story's similarity to Inception. Bear in mind if Nolan does take it, he and DiCaprio have a pretty healthy working relationship, so don't be surprised if the actor turns up in some way. Michael Bay is still trying to do that small indie flick of his, Pain & Gain, and likely wouldn't want to delay that. Talks with Yates have "waned", and Wyatt is something of a dark horse at this point. Neither he or Cuaron have any projects lined up immediately, so they may be the best candidates.
Cuaron sounds like a natural fit if you ask me, but after all the problems he had completing Gravity, he may want a break.
