Tops at the Box Office: Real Steel retains it's title
1. Real Steel- $16.3M/$51.7M
Shawn Levy and Disney continue to grin, although a full blown smile is still probably a few weeks away. Real Steel slipped 40% from last week, maintaining it's hold on #1 by just edging out the first of two straight 1980s remakes.
2. Footloose- $16.1M
Two 80s remakes in one week? Really? This is reminiscient of last year when we got The A-Team and The Karate Kid in the same weekend, and just like then there is a very clear winner. Footloose doubled the take of The Thing, with a number that Paramount should be happy with(although reports are they arent). The dance hall flick has no marketable names, and a premise firmly entrenched in the 80s. Expect it to do well in the long term, especially on DVD.
3. The Thing- $8.7M
This was always going to be a tough sell. A prequel to a cult favorite in a niche genre. The problem is it'll have to square off with Paranormal Activity 3 next week, and since horrors tend to die fast, expect a HUGE dropoff next weekend.
4. The Ides of March- $7.5M/$22.1M
George Clooney's political thriller held strong in it's second week, only slipping 28% from last week. Movies like this, clearly geared for a more mature crowd, tend to have long legs. Just look at what Moneyball has done in recent weeks.
5. Dolphin Tale- $6.3M/$58.6M
6. Moneyball- $5.5M/$57.7M
7. 50/50- $4.3M/$24.3M
8. Courageous- $3.4M/$21.4M
9. The Big Year- $3.3M
The other national release features the usually reliable trio of Jack Black, Owen Wilson, and Steve Martin. But clearly somebody upstairs saw that this was a comedy without a whole lot of teeth, as it only opened in 2150 theaters. Fox wasted a great opportunity to score with the adult crowd and present something unique. Instead The Big Year will be long forgotten by next week.
10. The Lion King 3D- $2.7M/$90.4M
