Universal preps sequel to 1999 romantic comedy, The Best Man

Has anybody been clamoring for a sequel to The Best Man? If you don't recall the 1999 film, it starred Taye Diggs(Go) as a writer about to be the best man at the wedding of his best friend(Morris Chestnut), only there's one little problem. Diggs' autobiography is about to hit store shelves, and it talks pretty openly about how he nailed his best friend's future wife. D'oh. It's actually a pretty decent film, usually paired up with Diggs' other 1999 hit, The Wood.  But seriously, a sequel? According to Deadline, that's exactly what we're going to get.

Universal has tapped Malcolm D. Lee, who wrote and directed the first film, to do the same and produce a sequel to The Best Man. The plan is to have the entire cast return, which included Terrence Howard, Nia Long, and Sanaa Lathan. While this might sound like a totally left field idea, considering the film is twelve years old and only grossed about $34M, it sprung from a reunion Lee had with the cast, who totally dug the thought of revisiting the characters.

We haven't seen anything out of Lee since 2008's Soul Men, notable for being the final film of the late Bernie Mac. No word on when this one might kick into production, but the principle cast outside of Terrence Howard(recently booked for Robert Redford's The Company You Keep) should have no problem fitting it into their schedule.

I dig the cast, and having them back makes me think this won't be such a terrible idea. We'll see how this develops over the next few months.
