Nobody doubts that Tom Cruise isn't a believe tough guy. We've seen him kick butt numerous times, and arguably he never did it better than in last year's Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol. So that's not the reason why some were up in arms over the decision to cast him as Jack Reacher in One Shot. Reacher is the ex-military officer and protagonist of author Lee Child's series of bestselling novels, and he's a massive, stoic presence, measuring 6' 5" and weighing about 250 lbs with a chest like the broad side of a Sherman tank. Tom Cruise? Well...he's kind of a munchkin.
We're getting our first look at Cruise in the role, and while it doesn't exactly show much, it does confirm that he's still pretty teensy. The story has Reacher pulled into the investigation of a sniper who went off on a killing spree, but may or may not have committed the murders. Christopher McQuarrie(Valkyrie) wrote the script and will direct, and he spoke to EW about his perspective on the Reacher character...
McQuarrie: “He is an extremely pragmatic, matter-of-fact person. He’s very solitary, but he can’t walk away from a situation that needs to be made right. His own sense of right and wrong tie into that situation and he can’t leave until it’s been resolved. That’s his Achilles heel.”
I think that sums up the character quite nicely. Rosamund Pike, David Oyelowo, Richard Jenkins, Jai Courtney, Robert Duvall, co-star, and let's not forget that Werner Herzog will make this film totally ape dump insane as a bad guy. One Shot hits theaters on December 21st.
